Merrimack Valley Armenians Plan 25th Anniversary Celebration of Armenian Independence

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. — As the Armenian world celebrates the prestige of four Olympic medals, including gold, all eyes are turning toward another important festivity, the 25th anniversary of Armenia’s Independence.

And Merrimack Valley is no exception.

The silver anniversary of Armenia’s liberation from Soviet rule will take place Sunday, Sept. 18, at 12:30 p.m. with a dinner and program in Jaffarian Hall, St. Gregory Church, 158 Main St., North Andover.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Lowell “Aharonian” Gomideh and Armenian National Committee of Merrimack Valley.

Main speaker will be Dr. Anna Ohanyan, professor of political science and international relations at Stonehill College.

The subject of her talk will be: “The Republic of Armenia: 25 years of Independence: Challenges and Opportunities for the Future.”

Ohanyan chairs the Political Science Department at Stonehill. She is a Fulbright Scholar and previously served as a doctoral fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Her work has taken her across the globe, from Northern Ireland to the Balkans and South Caucasus.

Ohanyan serves on the Board of Eurasia Partnership Foundation-Armenia, Caucasus Research Resource Center-Armenia and Eurasia International University of Armenia.
