Armenian President Beats FIDE Chief in Blitz Chess

MOSCOW (Armenpress) — Armenian President Serge Sargisian defeated the International Chess Federation (FIDE) President Kirsan IlyumzhinSerzh-Sargsyan-Kirsan-Ilyumzhinov-16-620x300ov in an impromptu blitz chess game on March 15, Narek Nikoghosyan, assistant to the press secretary of the president of Republic of Armenia wrote on his Facebook page.

Radio of Armenia reported that the game took place along the sidelines of the Candidates Tournament in Moscow.

Sargisian is also the chairman of Armenia’s Chess Federation.

Armenia’s leading chess player, Levon Aronian, is participating at the tournament along with 8 other acclaimed contenders. The winner of the tournament will compete for the World Champion’s title in New York on November 11-30.

As the Chess Federation of Armenia is a sponsor of the event, the opening ceremony was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Armenia’s independence.
