WATERTOWN — On Monday, May 1, the St. James Men’s Club will host its losh kebab and/or kheyma dinner at 7 p.m. in Keljik Hall in the Cultural Center. Tickets are $20. Guest speaker will be Robert M. Avakian, JD, director of investments at Oppenheimer & Co., in Boston. He will speak on legacy planning, investing basics and risk management elements and changing market conditions.

As a director at Oppenheimer & Co. in Boston, Avakian serves as a holistic financial planner and he has acted as a consolidator of financial statistics and as a risk manager for his client families over the past 25 years. He has used technical analysis and his legal background to advise retail and corporate clients on how to safeguard assets, prepare for retirement, allay estate taxes and create value in their companies. Bob’s cardinal rule is to maintain confidentiality and his mission is to guide families and companies in making informed decisions to meet their goals and objectives with complete specifics on costs and fees.

Bob began at Morgan Stanley in Boston and was recruited to the Bank of America as an AVP in the Boston headquarters. He moved on to AG Edwards/Wachovia Bank as an AVP and then recruited to First Command Financial where he was Rookie Advisor of the Year and then full Advisor of the Year and won the Long Term Care Award 2 years in a row.

He graduated from the Massachusetts School of Law in 1992 and was awarded the Founder’s Club Award for diligence after serving as president of the Student Bar Association and founding the law school periodical, Imprimatur. He was also a Federal Court and Superior Court intern. He has served as a locally elected official for 15 years. He is currently the New England Grand District Representative for the Knights of Vartan and vice chair of the Armenian Students Association, Inc.

As a trusted advisor, his goal is to inform folks of their current financial state of affairs and structure an estate and retirement plan, review cash flow, risk tolerance and current holdings, set up a legacy agenda to pass assets to their spouses and children tax free, then establish a long-term care strategy after looking at statistics and evidence to guide their thought process. It can be an informative and motivating process that makes a significant difference in future family wealth when conducted with an interactive and thorough method.

St. James Armenian Church is located at 465 Mt. Auburn St. in Watertown. For details call the church. No RSVP required.
