ISTANBUL (Agos) —Samanyolu Street in Istanbul’s Sisli district has been renamed for Armenian journalist Hrant Dink.

Dink, the editor-in-chief of the Istanbul-based Turkish-Armenian weekly Agos, was shot dead at the age of 52 in broad daylight by an ultranationalist outside his office in central Istanbul on January 19, 2007.

Ogün Samast, then a 17-year-old unemployed high-school dropout, confessed to the killing and was sentenced to almost 23 years in jail back in 2011.

The names of several streets in the city have been changed because the municipality was concerned they would evoke the community of the exiled cleric, Fettulah Gulen.

The Istanbul Municipal Council has decided to change the names of a total of 90 streets that included words which could be associated with FETÖ.
