Domingo Hindoyan Starts as Los Angeles Opera’s Music Director

LOS ANGELES — As of July 1, the Los Angeles Opera has a new music director, Domingo Hindoyan. He is succeeding James Conlon with a five-year contract.

Hindoyan was born in Caracas, in 1980. His father, Domingo Garcia, is a noted violinist and his mother, Viki Hindoyan, is a well-known lawyer who had immigrated from Aleppo, Syria.

Domingo Hindoyan started his career as a violinist, then he continued his education at Haute Ecole de Musique de Geneva and got a master’s degree in conducting, with highest distinction.

In 2019, he was named principal guest conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphany Orchestra and in 2020, was named chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2014, he married Sonya Yoncheva.

Upon his appointment as the music director of the Los Angeles Opera, he said: “I am proudly honored to step into the role of music director of Los Angeles Opera. From my first rehearsal, I sensed a remarkable bond with the company’s exceptional musicians, staff, and vibrant energy.”

In the 2026/27 season, he will conduct “Carmen” and “Nabucco.”
