ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. – The Tekeyan Cultural Association (TCA) chapter of Greater New York mourns the passing of Yeghishe Amirkhanian.

The father of active TCA member Dr. Svetlana Amirkhanian, Yeghishe passed away in Gavar, Armenia, on June 30, 2016 at the age of 98.

He was born in 1918 in the town of Nor Bayazid (today called Gavar). His parents, from Moush, had taken refuge in Nor Bayazid during the Armenian Genocide.

Amirkhanian received his education in the law department of Yerevan State University and became a lawyer. He served in the Soviet army as a youth, and fought the invading armies of Nazi Germany in World War II in defense of his homeland.

After the war, he married Yelena and returned to Soviet Armenia, and had two children, Eduard and Svetlana.

As a result of his reputation for impartiality, he was appointed a permanent member of the Supreme Court, and served there for decades. During the golden years of Soviet Armenia, he was granted the award of Honored Jurist of the Republic of Soviet Socialist Armenia.

In August, a service commemorating the fortieth day his death took place, at which large numbers of TCA members together with Dr. Amirkhanian’s friends and relatives paid their respects to this Armenian patriot.
