YEREVAN (PanArmenian.net) — The Armenian National Assembly on March 24 voted unanimously in favor of a statement recognizing the genocide of Greeks and Assyrians in Ottoman Turkey. All 117 members of the 131-seat body who were present in the chamber supported the document drafted jointly by all six factions.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov, who is of partly Greek heritage, said earlier that Armenian lawmakers also worked with representatives of Armenia’s Greek and Assyrian communities in drafting the statement.
The vote comes a month before Armenians are due to commemorate the centenary of the Ottoman-era Genocide in which more than 1.5 million of their forebears were slaughtered.
