BERDZOR, Karabagh — The Board of Directors of the Tekeyan Cultural Association (TCA) of US and Canada announces that School No. 2 of Berdzor in the Lachin Corridor (Kashatagh) region of Karabagh has been renamed Vahan Tekeyan School. The decision of the administration of the Kashatagh District to rename the school follows the TCA’s decision two years ago to sponsor that school, in addition to four others in Armenia.

TCA’s Sponsor a Teacher in Armenia program, now in its 10th year, allocates substantial annual supplements to the salaries of all teachers and non teaching staff of TCA-sponsored schools in Armenia and Karabagh to encourage the teachers to stay and to continue their mission of educating the children of Armenia. Over 200 students attend the dilapidated school in the mountainous Kashatagh district.

Some 300 teachers and 65 workers benefit from the Sponsor a Teacher program, which raises more than $50,000 annually in the US and Canada. The distribution is done once a year by the representatives of TCA and organized by TCA of Armenia. The other schools sponsored by the TCA in Armenia and named after Vahan Tekeyan are located in Yerevan, Garpi, Gumri and Stepanavan.

Last September a TCA delegation headed by the project manager and chairperson of TCA Board of Administrators Maro Bedrosian visited all five schools and supervised the distribution of the funds. The follow-up efforts of Roupen Mirzakhanian, chairman of TCA Armenia, and Gayane Mouradian, secretary, resulted in the official renaming of the Berdzor school.
