YEREVAN — After a long illness, Prof. Garlen Dallakian, former president of the Committee of C u l t u r a l Relations with Diaspora, former president of the Committee of Religious Affairs of Armenia, member of Armenia Academy of Science, historian and politician, died at age 80.
He was an honorary member of the Tekeyan Cultural Association, wrote the History of the Armenian Ramgavar Party and was one of the three leaders of Soviet Armenia right before its independence in 1991.
Dallakian used to call himself an “Armenian communist” and not a “communist Armenian.” He did much behind the scenes during the Soviet years to benefit Armenia, Karabagh and the diaspora, under the watchful eyes of the KGB.
The state funeral services and interment were on October 15. Delivering one of the eulogies at the ceremony was Edmond Azadian, co-chairman of the ADL Eastern District Committee of USA and Canada.
